Beyond Reykjavik

When I began planning my little trip to Iceland, these are the things I was dreaming of.

Formed by volcanic eruptions and discovered by Vikings, this country's history reads like a fairytale, its landscape the perfect setting.

Rolling hills and lava fields, with volcanoes that still erupt; a huge rift valley where tectonic plates tug and pull and tear the earth apart; snow-capped mountains; waterfalls like all the rivers in the world have merged at once; ice-cold glaciers; geysirs that bubble and blow; a magnificent coastline where the occasional polar bear floats in on the ice; steam that hovers mysteriously over the earth; and all that geothermal power bubbling away beneath its surface the whole time. It's like the very land itself is alive in this country and it's no wonder the people here believe in magic and trolls and elves.

Thank you, Iceland, you beautiful, beautiful land.
